How Often Do You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?!
Hello Lovely!
I hate to admit this, but as much as I do my makeup, I really don’t clean my makeup brushes enough. After lots of research, it is recommended to wash your brushes at least once a week. But if you have sensitive skin, or are prone to breakouts, you may want to consider washing them after every use. Looks like I should probably make a habit of doing it at least weekly. Maybe that could be a New Years resolution haha, wish me luck on that one!
Its really important to clean your beauty tools often. Makeup brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria, plus they harbor dirt and oils, which essentially is ending up on your skin. Can you say GROSS! All these un-welcomed guests on our brushes could very much be the cause to our skin troubles. Lets avoid some future breakouts, and skin irritation, am I right?!
If you are like me, you don’t have a makeup brush cleaner, and you don’t have one of those fancy new scrubby pads for cleaning your brushes either. Instead I’m making my own makeup cleaner solution, and a DIY Scrub Board. SUPER easy, plus most of these things you may already even have at home.
So lets get started!
Things You’ll Need:
DIY Scrub Board-
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glue Sticks (For Glue Gun)
- Plastic Clip Board
Makeup Cleaner Solution-
- 1 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 tbsp. Baby Soap or Dish Soap
- 1 cup Warm Water
- 1 drop Young Living Thieves Essential Oil (Optional)
Lets start with how to make your scrub board first.
Step One- Plug in your hot glue gun, and let it get warmed up. Make sure you have your glue sticks near by, in case you need more than one.
Step Two- Decide on your design. It can be as simple as lines and dots, or as intricate as making some sort of picture drawing. Your choice.
Step Three- Take your glue gun and start to draw out your design on the plastic clip board. You want to make sure you fill the board with different direction lines. This help with getting a good clean with your brushes.
Step Four- Let dry! Then its ready to use!
Now onto our makeup solution.
Step One- Add 1 cup of warm water to a bowl. Then add the Olive Oil and Baby Soap (or Dish Soap) to the warm water. Mix well. The Olive Oil is the best oil to use, as it wont leave residue on the bristles, and will actually moisturize instead. Baby Soap/Dish Soap does a great job at removing dirt and oils from your brushes.
Step Two- This step is optional. I like to add one drop of Young Living Thieves Essential Oil to the mixture. While it is mainly formulated for its antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, and insecticidal properties, it also has a lovely sweet and spicy aroma.
Step Three- Now its time to wash. Swirl your brush in the bowl of your makeup solution for a few seconds.
Step Four- Take your brush and scrub on your DIY Scrub Board for a minute. Then rinse with fresh warm water from your sink. Repeat this step until you are satisfied with how clean your brush is.
Step Five- Hang your brushes upside down to dry. I like to take a clothes hanger, and tie my brushes on with a hair tie.
Step Six- Your brushes will be ready to use once they are fully dry.
