Courtney’s 10 Tips For The Perfect Wedding Day Hair

Have you heard about the wedding boom?! We’re in it, RIGHT NOW! With so many weddings in 2020 getting post-poned, and even sadly cancelled due to the pandemic. This led to a rush of many weddings getting booked in 2021. For those of us in the wedding business, we are calling this The Wedding Boom. Wedding vendors are booking up at lightning speeds. So as a hairstylist, in the midst of this wedding boom, I’m ready to give you my 10 tips for perfect wedding day hair. Let’s get right to it!

Tip #1. (The most important tip of them all!) Do not, I repeat, DO NOT come to your hairstylist with wet hair on the day of your wedding. Most stylists do not plan for this extra time of drying your hair, so what they discuss and quote you for time and price could very well change when this happens. So lets just avoid this by having dry hair, preferably washed the day before. Hair that hasn’t been washed day of tends to hold styling better. This helps us create those beautiful looks you request.

Tip #2. Be prepared by having hair inspiration pictures. Yes, we stylists normally can get an idea of what you want by talking and discussing ideas. But remember what you envision and I envision, can be two absolutely different things without seeing an actual picture. By having one or more pictures ready, this eliminates any misunderstandings, and shows your stylist exactly what you want.

Tip #3. Do not make any big changes to your hair right before your wedding day. This day is going to be one you look back on for years to come. Wait for the big changes till after, this way it won’t be so heavily documented if you end up hating your big hair change. Sorry not sorry, but its true.

Tip #4. Choose a hairstyle YOU love. Don’t focus on what others think, or whats trending. If you love the hairstyle, then thats all that matters. Its your hair, on you and your spouses wedding day.

Tip #5. Always have a trial wedding hair appointment before your wedding day. This is so important, for multiple reasons. First, this helps your stylist get an idea of your hair type. Allowing your stylist to get a feel for your hair, and if extra styling is needed to hold. Second, this gives you the opportunity to actually see the hairstyle you chose on yourself. Sometimes you are going to love it right away, other times you may realize that isn’t the style for you. Both are absolutely ok, this is why we do trial appointments. We want your hair to be perfect for you on your wedding day.

Tip #6. Pack an emergency wedding day hair kit. Although there is usually no need for hair touch ups if your stylist has done their job correctly, this gives you the peace of mind if you do become in need of these things. Ask your stylist what products they will be using, and get those suggested products in travel size. Items to pack are bobby pins, hair ties, dry shampoo, hairspray, and a hair brush.

Tip #7. Plan your hair accessories. If you plan to wear hair accessories in your wedding day hair, make sure to let your stylist know, this way they can plan accordingly. Discussing with your stylist on how to incorporate your hair accessories into your chosen hairstyle is very important. This allows your stylist to plan and properly place your hair accessories to hold all day long. Try to hair your hair accessories with you for your trial appointment. This gives the opportunity to place them in different areas and see what you love the most before the day of your wedding.

Tip #8. Wear a button up or zip up top for getting ready. This helps when getting changed after your hair and makeup have been done. Try taking off a shirt over your head after you just had your hair styled, its mostly likely going to end up in a struggle of trying to avoid messing up your hair. This is why I recommend the ease of a button up top or a zip up.

Tip #9. Take care of your hair leading up to your wedding day. Pay special attention to your hair care in the weeks before your trial and wedding day. You want your hair in its best condition and healthy. Talk with your stylist and discuss the best products and treatments you can use for your hair type.

Tip #10. Just have fun. This is a day you will look back on forever. Try not to stress over the little things. Take deep breaths, take in each moment for what it is. Have fun in all the little moments of this special day you are sharing with those who love you.
